There aren't too many adaptations from Stephen King that translate all that well to the big screen. There are always high hopes, but those hopes get dashed pretty quick. But there are a couple who always happen to squeak by that are just simply amazing. Movies such as The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redepmtion, Stand By Me and Misery. Those movies are classics. While 1408 isn't a classic by any means, it is a far cry from a flop as some fo the other adaptations from Stephen King. The one thing that really helps this movie is John Cusack. He has to literally carry this movie on his shoulders. Sure there is a nice scene between him and Samuel L. Jackson and a quick scene with a phone call featuring Tony Shaloub(one of my favorites and a local boy), but Cusack is the one to keep this movie going. He did an awesome job. I've never been a big fan of John Cusack, but lately I've really have been starting to enjoy his work more and more. He doesn't go over the top with his character while slowly going insane, like most actors probably would have. He is so convincing that you are not sure if it is real or in his head. When Cusack first enters the room, the movie starts to have a creepy vibe. It keeps the vibe going for quite awhile. When his hand gets slammed in the window, to the ghosts jumping out of the window to the one ghost who looks like he is going to slash him up, it can actually give you the chills. The vertigo shots were quite well done as well to give a chilling vibe. But this goes too far and it gets a little silly. It loses the creepiness factor that it did so well to introduce, which then makes it boring as well. During that time, there was some laugh out loud scenes that I'm sure were not meant to be that way. But with a couple of false finishes, this movie ends on an extremely creepy note that left me with a little bit of the chills.
