George Romero has had the first three zombie movies he made, turned into remakes. While I could not stand the new version of the Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead was very enjoyable. This was a middle of the road kind of movie for me. This could have been a decent stand alone kind of film, they had to slap the Day of the Dead tag, which gave the fans high expectaions of this film. I also had some high expectations for this film. The only thing that was similar was the character of Bud the zombie and that was it. At least when George Romero has made these movies, he has shown the progression of the zombies slowly taking over the world, while his remakes have been basically stand alone films. Some of the flaws with this movie though started with the casting of Nick Cannon. Sorry, this is the first movie I've seen with Nick Cannon in, and I'm not a fan. Same thing with Mena Suvari, even though I've seen several of her movies. The fact that when the zombies changed, they had lesions on their face very quickly. Really didn't need that. Zombies climbing the walls? Could have been a decent idea if the script handled why they became zombies differently. There were some positives though. Good amount of gore for gorehounds. The movie was very fast paced, intense and had a decent claustophobic feel that is needed when watching zombie movies. Ving Rhames brief appearance. I wouldn't have minded seeing more of Rhames as he brings quite an intensity to a role. But I think I'm being generous with the score I gave this, but I have seen worse zombie movies.
