The Alamo
2004 Starring Dennis Quaid, Billy Bob Thorton, Jason Patric, Patrick Wilson, Marc Blucas Rated PG-13 137 Minutes
Based on the 1836 standoff between a group of Texan and Tejano men, led by Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie, and Mexican dictator Santa Anna's forces at the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas.
Rating:6/10 Billy Bob Thorton in an actor that continues to amaze me. He is fast becoming one of my favorite actors. In this version of The Alamo, he portrays Davy Crockett. And when he is on screen, Thorton is very engaging. It is almost like you can't take your eyes off of him, wondering what he is going to do next. Dennis Quaid also did quite well as Sam Houston. He was another character you couldn't take your eyes off of. The rest of the cast was so so and nothing really stuck out. the movie takes a lot of time to explain things and really gets off to a slow start and it just keeps plodding along. The last half hour of the film seems a bit rushed in comparison. I thought there was some amazing shots during the battle sequence in this movie. I really loved the aerial shot at night as the Mexicans are surrounding The Alamo. In my opinion, that shot could rival any shot in just about any movie with a battle scene in it. I also liked that the movie kept going and showed us how Santa Anna was defeated by Sam Houston. I also liked how Houston explained to his confidant about the strategy they were using to confuse his enemies, comparing them to Napoleon and using the strategy that defeated Napoleon. A decent movie that does demythologizes the characters, but it si quite slow and it does take some patience to watch this.
