Metropolis
1927 Starring Alfred Abel, Gustav Frohlich, Rudolf Klein-Rogge, Bridgette Helm Unrated 123 Minutes
It is the future, and humans are divided into two groups: the thinkers, who make plans (but don't know how anything works), and the workers, who achieve goals (but don't have the vision). Completely separate, neither group is complete, but together they make a whole. One man from the "thinkers" dares visit the underground where the workers toil, and is astonished by what he sees...
Rating:9/10 When watching a movie like Metropolis, you just have to wonder how they came up with all these effects, backgrounds and futuristic ideas. I was in awe just watching this movie, just on those merits alone. The scope of this film was huge. Watching the workers just trudging to work was a depressing sight. Not just because it was a couple workers trudging along, it was hundreds or workers trudging along. The bakcdrops made the city look like the largest city in the world. Explosions and the flooding were just as huge in scope and awesome to watch. Watching the workers work as well, seeing what they had to go through and watching their robotic like movements while working on the machines was scary looking as well. Watching one of the machines transforming into a hellish monster while eating the souls of thos working, will remind some of you of your own job. Bridgette Helm who played Maria/The Robot was excellent in her role. Because of this being a silent film, yo had to use your imagination a bit to figure out what was going on, but when Bridgette Helm came on screen, you could tell by her eyes what was ging through her head and her heart. Of course, all the actors had to exaggerate their acting a bit(hey it was a silent film after all), but this was all well done and you knew what was happening. I would say that this isn't going to be for everyone though. I'm sure most people would rather watch more fo a moden science fiction story than a silent film. But if you do watch it, I'm sure you will be amazed at the special effects, backgrounds and other ideas. They even looked better than their modern day counterparts in some movies. Throw in a decent story and you will get an excellent movie. Kick back and watch this. If you are a true film buff, you will understand the beauty of this movie.
