There's not much to do in the windswept Texas hamlet of Anarene, where the town's only cinema is about to close forever. High-school seniors Sonny and Duane lust after incorrigible flirt Jacy Farrow while trying to chart their uncertain futures. When Duane heads for Korea after joining the service and Jacy gets shipped off to college, Sonny is left behind in Anarene -- a ghost town in the making.
Rating:7/10 I had a hard time deciding on what to rate this movie. I liked it. The acting was well done. The story was alright, even though at times it was dry and the movie would slow right down. It also had a very awkward feel to it. This was more of an observational piece of small town characters, especially from the high school kids interacting with the adults back in 1951. I suppose it would be boring for the characters as it seemed as if there was nothing to do but play pool and go check out the picture show. But it was interesting to see how these characters were taking a downward spiral that seemed out of control. The movie showed you enough to show you why these characters were having their downward spiral. The fact that the movie was filmed in black and white adds another layer of atmosphere to this movie. This is quite a depressing film and the last scene gives you a feeling of emptiness and despair. This isn't for everyone, so think about it if you are going to watch this. This isn't a bad film though, but it is sad.
