The Rules of Attraction
2002 Starring James Van Der Beek, Shannyn Sossamon, Kip Pardue, Jessica Biel, Ian Somerhalder, Kate Bosworth, Swoosie Kurtz, Faye Dunaway, Fred Savage, Eric Stoltz Rated R 110 Minutes
The incredibly spoiled and overprivileged students of Camden College are a backdrop for an unusual love triangle between a drug dealer, a virgin and a bisexual classmate.
Rating:6/10 The Rules of Attraction is a different kind of movie. It is almost a satire of teenage and college comedies. The difference is in the characters. The characters in this were not likeable at all. These were characters I would not like to be around. But the acting was pretty good with several small roles with the likes of Eric Stoltz, Fred Savage and Faye Dunaway. There were several funny scenes in this. James Van Der Beek really pulled of the funny scenes quite well when he had to and when he had to go over the top. I didn't think he could do it. One of the scenes that will always stick with me was the girl who commited suicide in the bathtub. It was gruesome and something I know I will never forget. The visual gimmicks and the camera tricks actually looked pretty cool and did not take away from the movie. I just couldn't get into the story though. And trying to fit in a major character towards the end with a small video montage and voice over really took a little something away. It was almost as if they had to rush to get this character into the movie. I don't mind it when a movie challenges me, but I just couldn't get into the story or some of the characters. James Van Der Beek was the exception to this. This movie was a bit more predictable than I thought it would be as well. Maybe I just watch too many movies? Is there such a thing?
