Frequently cynical screenwriter Charlie Kaufman has just taken on a new assignment. That is, to adapt writer Susan Orlean's "The Orchid Thief" into a screenplay, all of it based on the life of the eccentric John Laroche, an exotic plant collector based out of Florida. While his easygoing twin brother Donald, is writing scripts with ease, Charlie finds himself on a perpetual struggle that never seems to end.
Rating:9/10 If there was ever a movie to ever surprise me, it would be Adaptation. I was blown away by this movie. I really liked the story and it was kind of funny on how this movie actually came about to be a movie and the kind of movie it was. I really love the fact that the characters are actually real people in a fictionalized story except for Donald Kaufman. I like how Charlie Kaufman incorporates Being John Malkovich(in which Kaufman wrote) into this movie. And what really really made this movie for me, was the fact that I had absolutely no clue as to what was going to happen next. No clue whatsoever. There were a couple of scenes that really made me jump out of my seat. Well twice actually and it made me take notice. The car crashes felt like I was really in those cars as they were being smashed. It was almost like I could feel the impact of the crashes. And I would wince. The characters were fascinating. Like I said, these were real characters, but the story was fictionalized, but based on a book that is a true story. How crazy it that? Nicolas Cage, who I'm usually not a big fan of, was awesome as the twins, Charlie and Donald Kaufman. Meryl Streep was quite a suprise for me, because I'm not a big fan of hers that much either. Well I really can't say that. I just haven't seen a whole lot of movies that she was in. The one actor I did not like in this movie was Ron Livingston. He was just annoying and I was kind of disappointed by him. I also didn't like Meryl Streep in the drug scene, but I guess they had to tie that in somehow. But I really loved this movie. I love the way it ended. I loved the voice overs. If it wasn't for those couple of little flaws, this would have been something great. What am I talking about? This was a great film. If you get a chance, check out this gem and enjoy it. I can't wait to show this to my friends.
